Across the Horizon is an ongoing music discovery project dedicated to expanding the world of instrumental music through collaboration, curation, and artistic curiosity. Each year, Northern Spy Records and musician Bob Holmes (SUSS, Ambient Country podcast) invite a small group of visionary artists to serve as curators. Rather than simply contributing their own music, each curator invites two artists whose work they admire, creating a chain of recommendations rooted in genuine creative relationships rather than algorithms or genre boundaries. The result is a community-built collection of 24 exclusive recordings that spans ambient, experimental, modern classical, jazz, Americana, electronic, drone, sound art, and countless spaces in between. Every track is created exclusively for the series, making Across the Horizon a place for new work, unexpected collaborations, and musical exploration. Released throughout the year in a series of curated drops, each volume unfolds gradually, allowing listeners to discover not only remarkable music, but also the artistic connections that inspired it. The project mirrors the conversations that happen between musicians themselves—sharing influences, introducing peers, finding common ground, and opening new creative pathways. Across the Horizon exists to celebrate discovery: for artists to champion one another, for listeners to encounter music they may never have found otherwise, and for the instrumental music community to continue growing beyond traditional boundaries. At the conclusion of each annual series, the complete collection is brought together as a subscriber-exclusive double vinyl edition and companion zine, documenting both the music and the community that created it. Whether you’re arriving as a longtime fan or hearing these artists for the first time, Across the Horizon is an invitation to follow curiosity, embrace unexpected connections, and discover what lies just beyond the horizon.
